CLASSROOM TEACHERS JOB DESCRIPTION
Classroom teachers shall take charge of the divisions or classes assigned to
them by the principal. They shall be responsible for the instruction, progress
and discipline of their classes, and shall devote themselves exclusively to their duties during school
hours These responsibilities shall include, but not limited to the following
categories: instructional planning, use of appropriate instructional methods, and evidence
of competence in subject matter taught or services provided. Teachers shall render
assistance in the educational program in the school-wide environment and demonstrate
effective classroom management. Teachers shall promote positive relationships
with pupils and community members and shall adhere to the professional responsibilities
and personal standards promulgated by the Chicago Public Schools.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS
Teachers should:
- Be guided by professional ethics in their relationships with students, parents,
the community and other school personnel.
- Devote themselves exclusively to their duties during school hours.
- Inform parents about the academic progress and conduct of their children, using
established citywide criteria.
- Indicate by attitude and actions genuine concern and respect for each student.
- Plan and conduct a program of instruction that captures the interest and meets the need of each student.
- Manage classroom routines so that they contribute to the program of instruction
and the development of civic responsibility.
- Be sensitive to the behavior of each student.
- Know and enforce the rules of the school courteously and with consistency.
- Deal with misconduct quickly, firmly and impartially.
- Keep parents informed and submit to parents, promptly, a report of student's
absence tardiness and cutting class.
- Report to work on a regular basis and be punctual.
- Observe the basic standard of cleanliness, modesty and good grooming.
Teachers have the right to:
- Be present at any disciplinary conference concerning serious classroom
disruption.
- Be free from any physical or verbal threats while carrying out their teaching
and other duties.
- Guarantees as cites in the Agreement between the Board of Education of the city
of Chicago and the Chicago Teachers Union.
Teachers are reminded:
- That the Board of Education Rule 6-21 states: "No employees of the Board
of Education may inflict corporal punishment of any kind upon persons attending
the public schools of the City of Chicago."
